Intermediate Course
For pilots that have advanced passed beginner but need guidance to the next level, the intemediate course with Zion will take you there. The 7 day course with daily instruction includes advanced tips on thermalling, wing safety and advanced manoeuvres with guided flights via the radio to suit your level.
The Course
Daily Activities:
AM: Morning XC flight from Alto Hospicio.

Alto Hospicio is a thermal site located above the city of Iquique. Here is where we practise thermalling and XC, crossing the city and landing at the chosen beach destination of the day.

Each morning we fly as a group completing varying XC tasks, making small triangles or linear distances before landing on the beach and breaking for lunch. Flying as a group makes it easier to understand the air and is a great way to visualise what is happening with the hot and cool air.

Zion and team will be flying with the group the whole time and on the radio offering guidance as we go. As the days go on we spend less time on the radio and observe more, so you can start to work it out for yourself, but of course we’re always there to help when you need it.

On the final day we aim to all complete a 60km XC task. If the weather permits we travel south to Patillos for take off and fly back to Iquique with the southerly tailwind – the retrieval van following closely behind.

PM: Afternoons are spent in the famous Palo Buque

Palo Buque is a thermal dynamic site and offers a chance for pilots to really play, practise manoeuvres, proximity flying and more XC. This is where we also offer more 1 on 1 tuition.

We don’t outline exactly what we look to improve with our students day by day as this is taken on a student by student basis based on your current ability and what you want to work on but an example of possible learnings are:

  • Advanced manoeuvres: rapid descent manoeuvres, spirals, wingovers, asymmetrical collapse, extra large big ears
  • Spot landings
  • Advanced kiting and ground handling
  • Thermalling technique
  • Speed bar and active piloting on speed bar
What’s Included
  • 7 days of instruction, practical and theory
  • Transport from accommodation to launch sites
  • Landing zone pick ups
  • Airport pickup from Iquique National Airport
